Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment approach that emphasizes mastering mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills to create meaningful life changes. The principle behind DBT is to balance acceptance and change while addressing problematic concerns through adaptive strategies. DBT has been found to be effective at addressing various psychological concerns, including broad emotional distress, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, and PTSD, through mitigating emotion dysregulation, low distress tolerance (e.g., low physiological low distress tolerance), and interpersonal concerns. My approach is to build on people’s existing strengths while introducing more adaptive strategies to help people become more resilient during adversity.
